We all want to eat better and exercise more, right? But why is it so hard to stick to a healthy lifestyle plan? The struggle is REAL. But maybe we’ve just been setting the wrong goals and tracking the wrong outcomes.
The usual goal
“I want to lose 10 pounds by the summer.” Does that sound familiar? You create a plan, stick to it for a few months, and monitor the numbers on the scale. It’s an uninspiring process, but you’re temporarily motivated, so you stick to your plan.
Say you actually achieve your goal of losing 10 pounds. What happens next? You likely feel great for a little while, but then slowly start to slip on your healthy habits because you’re not working towards a goal anymore. And slowly the weight comes back on. Ouch.
But what actually motivates us?
Let’s be honest, we’re human. What ultimately drives us is our feelings. So, although seeing a number drop on the scale might be temporarily motivating, it doesn’t actually correlate with how we feel. Why not track how we “feel” instead of numbers on the scale?
Let’s think about it a bit differently. What if “I want to lose 10 pounds by the summer” actually means & “I want to feel more confident and energetic”?
Set the plan
We suggest writing out your ideal healthy lifestyle plan in bullet points that you can easily measure and track. Here’s a reasonable plan to start.
- Eat a serving of fruit and vegetables with every meal
- Exercise 3 times per week.
Track your feelings
Now instead of tracking your weight or waist size, why not track your feelings?
Every week rate the following on a scale of 0 to 10:
Stick with it
As you see your confidence and energy rise, it’ll become crystal clear why you are on this path, and much easier to stick with your newly established healthy lifestyle. Try it out and let us know how it works for you. This approach has changed our lives and we hope it can change yours too!
Have a smooth day!
